Set in
1960s South Carolina against a background of racial
unrest, The Secret Life of Bees tells the
story of Lily Owens whose life has been shaped by
the family story that, as a small child, she
accidentally shot and killed her mother. When Lily's
beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a violent
group of racists on her way to register to vote, the
two escape to Tiburon—a town that holds the secret
to Lily’s past—and are taken in by an eccentric trio
of black, beekeeping sisters.
