A verbatim adaptation of the classic American autobiography, Black Boy dramatizes Richard Wright’s journey from childhood innocence to adulthood in the Jim Crow South. Wright’s difficult beginnings become even more so when his father leaves the family, his mother becomes chronically ill and he, along with his brother, is left to be raised by his grandmother. Things are further complicated by the fact that he is a confirmed agnostic living in a conservative religious home and community. The issues addressed in this novel still resonate in today's cultural dialogue.
