The House on Mango Street begins when the Cordero family moves into a red, ramshackle house—the first they have ever owned—in the Latino section of Chicago. Daughter Esperanza is disappointed to say the least. This is not the dream-house her parents had talked about. What follows is a series of vignettes, character sketches and instant snapshots of Esperanza’s family, neighborhood, friends and dreams as she comes of age and attempts to break through the obstacles of poverty, gender, and race that threaten her confidence and her future.
